What is a Black Belt?

in St. Louis - Dave Hanson's Gateway Karate

As life happens it's easy to get distracted and lose our momentum.  At times we need to be reminded that at Gateway Karate, "We are a black belt school."  We are committed to making black belts.

You may ask, "What is a black belt?"

A black belt is at our school is someone who has learned to make a commitment, work hard, grow through the challenges and see it through to completion.

A black belt is an individual that is a person who has become part of at team. Because you can't achieve black belt alone.  We need each other to do great things!

A black belt is an "expert beginner" so many people think of black belts as experts, but that's not the case in Japan, where the black belt was created!  In Japan a karate black belt is considered a "monjin" a person who is walking into a gate.  What is that gate, it's a gate of new opportunities and new challenges for greater growth and personal development.

A black belt is an expert at the basics with a great foundation for further success!

A black belt is an individual that has learned that it's not about the destination "black belt", but it's about the journey to "black belt."  The journey is where life is lived and if you live just for the destination you will be disappointed.

A black belt is not something that only the few exceptional athletes can attain, but something anyone with the determination and effort can achieve over a period of time.

A black belt is not for everyone.  It's for anyone who wants to achieve it and accepts the challenge, but not everyone will take the journey, or make the commitment it takes to achieve it.

A black belt is not made in a day, but daily.  It's a process.  Little by little.  "By the yard it's hard, but by the inch it's a cinch!"

A black belt is something YOU can achieve if you are willing to make the commitment.  And becoming a black belt teaches us that, “commitment always comes before success!"

A black belt is a personal journey you take with the support and encouragement of a team, your dojo family.

We look forward to taking the journey to black belt with you and remind you that you can do it, just like so many students before you.
