What's Your Little Red Kick Bag?

Kids Karate in St. Louis - Dave Hanson's Gateway Karate

As we close this year and look with anticipation to the start of a new one, it is a good time to reflect on our past accomplishments and also on our opportunities for learning, also known as our failures. For me this is a time to look back and remember the beginning of a new adventure.  In just a few weeks our school will celebrate its fourteenth anniversary.  It was on a cold Friday evening on January 5th of 2004 Senpai Rachel and I walked into a Dance Studio and officially started our dojo.  I taught for a few years before then, but this was our first professional endeavor to open up our own dojo.  I remember those times and the thoughts of the unknown as we took a step of faith.  That step felt like a leap that first year, especially on that very first class when we didn’t know if anyone would show up.  We showed up with our karate uniforms on and our little red kick bag.  At that time that’s all we had to work with. No dojo, no workout equipment, no nice thick cushy training mats. Just us a little red kick bag and our little seed of faith.  The lesson I learn from this experience as I reflect back is that you just have to take what you have, for us it was that little red kick bag and our faith, and do what you can and trust God for the next step in the path.  What is your “little red kick bag” that you could use to take you one more step closer to the fulfillment of your dreams? I encourage you to step out in faith and try.
